The story
History
Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified ksar of red-earth kasbahs built along an ancient caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. The oldest constructions date to the 17th century, but the site has been inhabited since at least the 11th. The village clings to a hillside above the Ounila river — Berber families still live in a handful of the kasbahs, even as most residents have moved across the river to the modern village. UNESCO listed Ait Ben Haddou in 1987 as a remarkable example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture.
The site has been a film location since the 1960s. Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Prince of Persia and Game of Thrones all shot here. Walk the lanes at quiet hours and you understand why filmmakers keep coming back — nothing else in the world looks quite like it.

Most visitors arrive from Marrakech. The 190 km drive takes about 4 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), one of the great High Atlas crossings. Stop at the pass for tea and snow-capped views, then descend into the desert foothills. From Ouarzazate it is only 30 minutes by road. Public buses serve Ouarzazate; from there grand-taxis run to the ksar in 45 minutes.
If you are heading deeper into the Sahara — Zagora, Merzouga — Ait Ben Haddou is the natural first stop on day one of a 2 or 3 day desert tour.

October to April. Summer days hit 40°C and the south-facing kasbahs reflect heat into your face; winter mornings are cold but the light is clear and the crowds are thin. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures, blue skies, and almond or olive trees in bloom along the Ounila valley.
Plan to be on site at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset. The mud-brick walls turn deep amber and the ksar empties out as day-trippers head back toward Marrakech.

The ksar itself is open 24 hours and free to walk through. On busy days a small fee (around 10 MAD) is collected at the footbridge from the new village. Two or three of the restored kasbahs charge 10–20 MAD entry — worth it for the panoramic rooftop views. Bring small change, card payment is rare.
